Our vision

To minimize the financial challenges associated with the field of aviation and to promote community, so students have the opportunity to safely and successfully explore the world of aeronautics.

Why we exist

Flying is expensive. Curiosity shouldn't be.

Most teenagers who are curious about aviation never sit in a cockpit. The cost of a first lesson and not knowing where to start keep them on the ground.

Husband and wife Scott Dorsey and Holly Blunk are both career educators. They started the Foundation alongside Route 66 Flight School so students could find out what flying is really like, with teachers who love teaching it.

Meet the founders and board

The Annual Mini Camp

High school juniors and seniors spend time in ground school, on the ramp, and in the air on a discovery flight.

How the camp works

The Foundation's camp was supported in fiscal year 2025 by a Camps & Workshops education grant from the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics.

Signature program

The Mini Camp

Once a year, high school juniors and seniors come to Wiley Post Airport to learn how airplanes fly. Then they go fly one.

From the classroom to the cockpit

Campers follow the same path every student pilot does on a first lesson.

  1. Students and an instructor holding their arms out like wings in a classroom

    Ground school

Students learn what keeps an airplane in the air and how the controls work. Arms make good wings.

  2. Students seated around a diner booth with a pile of aviation headsets on the table

    Briefing and headsets

An instructor walks through the flight, hands out headsets, and explains how pilots talk on the radio.

  3. An instructor explaining the tail of a Cessna to a group of students on the ramp

    Preflight on the ramp

Campers walk around the airplane with an instructor and check it the way pilots do before every flight.

  4. A smiling student standing beside a red, white and blue Cessna 172

    Discovery flight

Each camper goes up with a certificated flight instructor and takes the controls over Oklahoma City.

Students come from across the metro

Campers have arrived wearing the colors of Deer Creek, Edmond Memorial, Mustang, John Marshall, and other area high schools. Several already study aviation at school. For many, camp is the first time they have flown in a small airplane.

Dr. Scott Dorsey

Co-founder
ATPCFIIDoctorateVeteran

Dr. Scott Dorsey is co-founder of the Route 66 Flight School Foundation and one of Oklahoma's best-known flight instructors. A military veteran, he spent about 25 years as a tenured college professor of music education and was active in the collegiate choral community before turning a lifelong love of flying into a second career.

That career has included three years as an airline pilot and roughly two decades of teaching in the cockpit. He holds an Airline Transport Pilot certificate and is an instrument flight instructor. In 2020 he co-founded Route 66 Flight School at Wiley Post Airport in Oklahoma City with his wife, Holly Blunk.

Scott remains hands-on with the Foundation and its annual mini camp. He brings decades of teaching experience and a lifelong commitment to mentorship to every student who comes through the door.

Holly Blunk is co-founder of the Route 66 Flight School Foundation alongside her husband, Dr. Scott Dorsey, and a career educator with more than 15 years in the classroom. She teaches French at Deer Creek Schools in Edmond, where she also works with the French exchange student program.

At Route 66 Flight School, Holly leads the dedicated ground school as "Dottie" of Dot & Dottie's Ground School. She is an instrument-rated pilot, holds both Advanced and Instrument Ground Instructor certificates, and is active in Oklahoma's community of women in aviation.

Holly remains closely involved in the Foundation's work, including its annual mini camp. Her experience with high school students shapes how the Foundation teaches, and she supports its mission of helping young people explore aviation safely and successfully.

Board of Directors

BD

Bailey DeVaughn

Board member
Pilot

Bailey DeVaughn brings energy, discipline, and a teacher's heart to the Route 66 Flight School Foundation's Board of Directors. With a background in elementary education, she knows how to meet young people where they are, spark their curiosity, and help them believe they can do hard things.

Bailey also has a background in personal training and competitive fitness. Both taught her the value of preparation and consistency, the same habits that make a good pilot. She earned her wings at Route 66 Flight School as a student of co-founder Dr. Scott Dorsey.

Having experienced that training firsthand, she understands what a first flight can mean to a young person. As a board member, she supports the Foundation's mission of opening aviation to students and encouraging them to set ambitious goals.

TD

Ted Dockrey

Board member
Pilot

Ted Dockrey brings a background in entrepreneurship, leadership, and business development to the Route 66 Flight School Foundation's Board of Directors. Raised in his family's heating and air business, Ted went on to build companies of his own and is recognized nationally for his success as an entrepreneur, including being named to ACHR NEWS's Top 40 Under 40.

Ted is a pilot based at Wiley Post Airport in Oklahoma City. He learned to fly at Route 66 Flight School as a student of co-founder Dr. Scott Dorsey, where he saw the difference that a dedicated instructor makes in a student's life.

As a member of the Foundation's board, he supports its mission of lowering the financial barriers to aviation. He is committed to giving young people the same opportunity to discover flying that shaped his own path.

TM

Tyson Mauldin

Board member
A&P / IACFIUSAF veteran

Tyson Mauldin brings a background in aircraft maintenance, military service, and flight instruction to the Route 66 Flight School Foundation's Board of Directors. A veteran of the United States Air Force, he served six years as a KC-10 crew chief before building a civilian career as one of Oklahoma's leading aircraft mechanics.

Tyson owns and operates Leading Edge Aviation at Clarence E. Page Municipal Airport. He holds an Airframe and Powerplant certificate with Inspection Authorization, has been flying since 2009, has logged more than 1,500 hours, and is a certificated flight instructor.

As a member of the Foundation's board, he offers students a view of aviation that reaches beyond the cockpit. He supports the Foundation's mission of introducing young people to the many careers that keep airplanes flying safely.

RM

Ryan Morrison

Board member
Pilot

Ryan Morrison brings a background in business ownership, leadership, and community involvement to the Route 66 Flight School Foundation's Board of Directors. He is the founder of Morrison Cup Solutions, an Edmond company that supplies custom-printed cups and packaging to restaurants, convenience stores, and venues across the country.

As a member of the Foundation's board, he supports its mission of making aviation accessible to young people. He brings a business owner's perspective to the work of growing the Foundation and widening its reach across Oklahoma.

DP

Rev. Dr. Debi Powell-Maxwell

Board member
Ground instructor

Rev. Dr. Debi Powell-Maxwell brings a background in community leadership, ministry, and service to the Route 66 Flight School Foundation's Board of Directors. Having served as pastor of First Christian Church in Yukon, Oklahoma, Debi has dedicated much of her professional life to encouraging others and helping individuals recognize their potential.

Aviation is a passion Debi shares with her husband, Rev. Dr. Kyle Maxwell, who is a pilot. She is a certificated ground instructor and teaches ground school at Route 66 Flight School alongside co-founder Holly Blunk, giving students the knowledge they need before they ever leave the ground.

Debi's philosophy of service is perhaps best reflected in her own words: "When you know better, do better. Press on." It is a message of growth, perseverance, and possibility that resonates with the Foundation's commitment to the next generation.

Get involved

Put a student in the left seat.

Gifts to the Foundation pay for airplane time, instructors, and materials so cost doesn't decide who gets to try flying.

Three ways to help

Give. Donations help get students into ground school and up in the air.

Volunteer. Pilots, mechanics, teachers, and parents all have a job at camp and at our fundraisers.

Tell a student. If you know a high school junior or senior who looks up when an airplane goes over, send them our way.
